The first half of Joshua describes the seven-year conquest of the Land of Promise trough faith and obedience on the past of Joshua and the people. After their spiritual and physical preparation, the Israelites took the land in three campaigns: central, southern, and northern. The last half of the book details the partitioning of the land among the twelve tribes and closes with Joshua's challenge to the people.

Devotional
Have your parents ever asked you to do something that just does not make sense? Like make your bed-when you are just going to mess it up again at the end of the day! When your parents ask you to do something you do not understand, it is still important to obey them. Obeying show that you love and respect them.
Sometimes, God asks His people to do things that does not make sense. Think about Joshua. Who would have thought that marching around Jericho would do any good? Bu Joshua loved God and trusted him, so he obeyed him, Jericho's walls went tumbling down. When God asks you to do something you do not understand like love your enemies or be kind to the bully at school be like Joshua. Obey God because you love him, and he will do awesome things in your life!
  1. Is there something your parents or teachers ask you to do that just does not make sense? Why might they ask you to do it?
  2. Jesus often did things that world said didn't make sense-like eating with sinners, touching people with leprosy, and talking to Samaritans. Why do you think Jesus did those things?
  3. Defeating Jericho was a big challenge for Joshua and the Israelites. Think of a big challenge facing you, and ask God how he wants you to overcome it.
  4. The Bible says, "Do everything without grumbling or arguing" (Philippians 2:14). Decide today that you will obey-even if it does not make sense-without grumbling or arguing. Choose to smile instead.
  5. Prayer: Dear God, I don't always understand the things you ask me to do , but I will trust you. Help me to obey you always. Amen.

Keeping a Promise
When the people of the nearby town of Gibeon heard how Jericho had fallen, they feared for their own lives. They decided to trick the Israelites into signing a peace treaty with them, by pretending they came from a far off land.
They send messengers dressed in ragged clothes, with stale bread and leaking water-skins. When Joshua asked who they were, they answered. "We have travelled a long way. This bread was fresh our of our ovens when we started. Now it is stale. And our shoes are almost worn through form walking!"
Joshua drew up a peace treaty with the men of Gibeon and swore an oath to keep it. When the Israelites learned the truth they were furious, but nevertheless, when Gibeon was attacked soon afterwards, the Israelites came to their aid, for Joshua was honourable. God had not been pleased with his rashness in signing the treaty, but he was please that he was keeping his word. He helped the Israelites to overcome Gibeon's enemies, and even made the sun and moon stand still until they had avenged themselves!
The people of Israel had many more battles to win, but, with God's help, the land was finally theirs.
